Walter S. Avis was born in Toronto, Ontario. He was appointed to the teaching staff of the Royal Military College of Canada, where he subsequently held a full professorship of English. He was a founding member of the Canadian Linguistic Association (CLA) and a member of the founding committee for the Canadian Association for Applied Linguistics.
