These are poignantly constructed poems that deal with deep, sensitive personal feelings and experiences. They are moving in their simplicity, directness, and clarity. The strength, character and resiliency of Mercedez comes through as she describes tragic events, prejudice, abusers as well as those she loves in her "short, long life". Using events from the past to reveal her present, we are then lifted towards hope for bright future for this talented young woman.
Mercedez Tate (2021) is an 18—year—old Plains Cree woman from Poundmaker Cree Nation, Saskatchewan, on Treaty 6 territory. Her Cree name, AsinĪyIskwew, means"Rock Woman."
Her poetry has appeared in The Mirimachi Review and other publications.
This is her first collection of poetry in book form.
